Harry Anderson 1970 - 74, a written account.

Harry Anderson relocated to Philadelphia, PA on January first 1970 leaving Chicago at the dawn of a new decade driving into a rising sun. In the years between 1970 and 1974 his work would encompass Sculpture, Site specific pieces with subsequent documentation, Photography and Artist books.

In June of 1971 Harry Anderson participated in his first New York Exhibition at 112 Green Street. The group show was organized by Italo Scanga. Other artist whose works were exhibited include among them Larry Becker, Richard Calabro, Heidi Nivling and Joan Watson. In 1972 he had his first exhibition at the Henri Gallery at 21st. and P Streets in Washington, D.C. He would exhibit with the legendary art dealer until her death in 1996. That year also saw exhibits at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA in collaboration with Italo Scanga and at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY in collaboration with John Benson. He continued to exhibit Sculpture, Site specific pieces, Photography and Artist books over the next few years.

Anderson produced his first two artist’s books during this period, both in collaboration with Jack Kruger. In 1972 WORKING ALONE AND OTHER CONFUSIONS #1 was published and distributed through the Paula Cooper Gallery, New York, NY. In 1973 WORKING ALONE AND OTHER CONFUSIONS #2, which was distributed by Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY and Jap-Ritman, New York, NY was published. Most of Anderson’s book works are in The Museum of Modern Art Library, NY, NY.

His interest in Graphics and photography led him to design and publish a wide variety of booklets, posters and exhibition announcements such as those listed here:

Anderson taught at Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, PA as an instructor of Design, Sculpture and Photography, at the Pilchuck Workshop, Stanwood, WA, at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA also as an instructor of Design, at Philadelphia College of Art, Philadelphia, PA. Instructor of Design and at the Cheltenham Art Center, Cheltenham, PA as an instructor of Sculpture, in these years.
